Khaberni - Several workers were killed and others were injured due to a massive explosion and fire that broke out inside a biscuit factory in central Greece, according to local authorities today.
The Greek Fire Brigade reported that the incident occurred at the Violanta biscuit factory near the city of Trikala, about 320 kilometers north of the capital Athens, during the night shift, noting that at least four workers lost their lives, while one person is still missing.
The authorities clarified that seven people, including a firefighter, were taken to the hospital for treatment, confirming that their conditions are stable and do not pose danger to their lives, and that most injuries were due to respiratory issues caused by inhaling smoke.
About 40 firefighters and 13 fire vehicles participated in extinguishing the fire, with operations to control the flames lasting for several hours, before the teams were able to retrieve the bodies of the victims, all of them women, from inside the severely damaged building.
The Greek police confirmed that specialized investigators and fire experts are still at the scene to determine the precise causes of the explosion, while the owner of the factory stated that the cause of the fire is still unknown so far.
Search operations continue for the missing person, amidst wide anticipation for the results of the official investigation into one of the most dangerous industrial accidents in the region in recent times.
