United Nations 3 million displaced Sudanese return home due to war

Khaberni - The International Organization for Migration, a part of the United Nations, reported on Monday that more than 3 million displaced Sudanese have returned to their homes despite ongoing fierce fighting in some areas of the country.

Sudan has been witnessing a devastating war between the army and the rapid support forces since April 2023, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

The fighting has forced about 14 million people to flee to areas within the country or abroad.

The organization estimated in a report that about 3.3 million Sudanese had returned home by the end of November 2025.

The number of returnees increased after a large-scale attack by the army on the rapid support forces in the middle of the country in late 2024, which allowed for the recapture of Khartoum in March 2025, prompting many families to return.

The International Organization for Migration reported that more than three-quarters of the returnees are internally displaced persons.

Khartoum recorded the highest number of returnees, nearly 1.4 million people, followed by the state of Gezira, where approximately 1.1 million returned.

Earlier this month, the government, backed by the army, announced its intention to return to the capital after nearly three years of operating from the city of Port Sudan (east).

Khartoum and other cities controlled by the army in the center and east of the country are relatively calm, but the rapid support forces continue to carry out sporadic strikes with drones, particularly targeting infrastructure, while fighting continues in other areas.
