Lula Requests Trump to Limit the Work of the Peace Council to Gaza and to Grant Palestine a Seat in It

Khaberni - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked his American counterpart Donald Trump on Monday to limit the "Peace Council's" operations, which he established, to the Gaza Strip during a phone call in which they agreed to meet in Washington, according to the Brazilian presidency.

The presidency stated in a release that Lula, who was invited like other world leaders to participate in the "Peace Council" established by Trump, proposed that this body's work be limited to the Gaza issue and include a seat for Palestine.

The Brazilian president stressed "the importance of carrying out comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, including the increase in the number of permanent members in the Security Council."

Lula accused the American president of seeking to become the "master" of a "new United Nations" through the establishment of the "Peace Council," and the expansion of its role to include international conflicts.

The White House announced the "Peace Council" headed by Trump as part of a plan to end the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, but the "charter" establishing it granted Trump a broad role, raising concerns about forming a body competing with the United Nations.

Lula and Trump have communicated several times since their first official meeting in October, after months of tension.

After this rapprochement, the American administration exempted major Brazilian exports from customs duties of 40% that had been imposed in the context of the trial of Jair Bolsonaro, the former president and ally of Trump.

The Brazilian presidency reported on Monday that Lula discussed the situation in Venezuela with Trump and called for "maintaining peace and stability in the region" after the American military operation that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro.

The Brazilian president previously considered the operation "exceeded acceptable limits."

The presidents of Brazil and America agreed during the call that Lula would visit Washington, with the date to be determined after trips he will make to India and South Korea in February, according to the Brazilian presidency.
