Barcelona Third How did VAR Help Real Madrid

Khaberni - The "VAR" video technology plays a significant role in enhancing the teams' scores from penalty kicks, which has assisted Real Madrid in the Spanish League.

The Assistant Video Referee technology "VAR" was officially introduced in La Liga at the beginning of the 2018–2019 season, and it was the first time this technology was used in La Liga matches to review situations related to goals, clear errors, penalty kicks, and red cards.

According to statistics, Real Madrid has received 86 penalty kicks since the introduction of "VAR" to the Spanish League championship, with a significant gap from its closest competitors.

Valencia ranks second in that list with 45 penalties, followed by Barcelona in third place with 43 penalties. Real Sociedad and Villarreal follow, each with 41 penalties.

Real Madrid has fortified its position at the top of that list after obtaining 10 penalty kicks in this 2025-2026 season of the Spanish League and still has 17 rounds left in the competition, having played 21 matches so far.

Last season, "Los Merengues" received 14 penalty kicks, which is the highest number for them in a single season.

The record for the highest number of penalty kicks in a single season in the Spanish League generally belongs to Barcelona, after the Catalonian club received 19 penalty kicks in the 2015-2016 season, two seasons before the introduction of "VAR".

It is worth mentioning that Barcelona currently leads the La Liga standings, ahead by a point from its closest follower and traditional rival, Real Madrid.
