Electricity and water companies should support citizens not burden them
Author: المحامي حسام حسين الخصاونة

In light of the increasing complaints from citizens about their inability to pay their electricity and water bills, it has become necessary for these companies to reconsider their policies and search for real solutions that relieve the burden on citizens instead of just sticking to traditional procedures that do not consider the changing living reality.

Among these solutions is the adoption of a flexible tariff system that considers the location of the residence, property value, and the economic situation of the areas. It is unreasonable to calculate the same tariff for a home in the upscale neighborhoods of Amman, valued at over a million dinar, as for a home in poor neighborhoods where the area does not exceed fifty square meters and it is dilapidated and about to collapse.

The tariff must also take into account seasonal changes and climatic conditions. During the summer months, air conditioners become a basic necessity, not a luxury, especially in the Jordan Valley areas that suffer from high temperatures, which necessitates a reduction of the tariff during these times in consideration of the citizens and to reduce their cost of living.

One of the reasons for the losses of major companies is due to the citizen's inability to pay. If the bill amount was proportionate to the citizen’s income, they would adhere to payment and stable revenues would be achieved for these institutions, instead of accumulating debts and losses.

Fair policies protect not only the citizen but also the national institutions themselves and build a relationship based on trust and sustainability where the citizen is a partner, not a burden.
