Jordan and Syria sign an agreement to supply Damascus with natural gas

Khaberni -   The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Syrian Arab Republic signed an agreement today in the capital, Damascus, for the sale and purchase of natural gas, aimed at supplying Syria with gas through Jordanian territory, which contributes to supporting the Syrian electricity sector and mitigating the severity of the energy shortage.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the National Electric Power Company of Jordan by its General Manager Dr. Sofyan Al-Batayneh, and on behalf of the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) by the Executive Vice President Engineer Hashem Saleh, with the presence of the Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh and his Syrian counterpart Engineer Mohammed Al-Bashir.

Al-Kharabsheh stated that the agreement stipulates that Jordan will supply the Syrian side with about (4) million cubic meters of natural gas daily, which is approximately (140) million cubic feet, indicating that these quantities will directly contribute to improving the stability of the electricity system in Syria and supporting the operation of generation stations.

He explained that Jordan has actually started supplying Syria with gas as of 1/1/2026, in quantities ranging between (30–90) million cubic feet daily, as part of an urgent support for the Syrian energy sector, and contributing to the reduction of electricity blackouts.

Al-Kharabsheh clarified that the project relies on the advanced infrastructure available in Jordan, where the floating regasification ship in the port of Aqaba is used to receive liquefied natural gas imported from global markets, and re-convert it into its gaseous state, then pump it via the Arab Gas Pipeline towards the Syrian territories all the way to Damascus, in the absence of the necessary infrastructure readiness on the Syrian side.

He noted that this agreement reflects Jordan's commitment to its pivotal role as a regional energy hub, and embodies the Kingdom's approach in supporting the Syrian brothers and enhancing Arab economic integration, emphasizing that the project comes within continuous Jordanian efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation with Syria, and meet part of its natural gas needs, achieving a noticeable improvement in the electricity supply as per approved operational plans.
