Worth 33 Billion Kuwait Awards Contract to Chinese Company to Build Sewage Plant

Khaberni - The Central Agency for Public Tenders in Kuwait has approved proceeding with the «direct contract» between the Ministry of Public Works and the Chinese Construction Engineering Corporation for the construction of the Northern Kabd Sewage Plant with a total value of 999.85 million dinars ($3.276 billion).

This is the largest sewage treatment plant in terms of capacity in the Gulf country, and the Chinese company will be responsible for constructing, operating, and maintaining the plant and its auxiliary works. The contract duration is 10 years.

The official newspaper reported on Sunday that after its operation, the plant is expected to treat up to one million cubic meters of sewage daily using advanced technologies.

Kuwait faces difficulty in reusing treated sewage water as much of it is discharged into the sea due to limited storage capacity and infrastructure, as well as quality restrictions that limit the reuse of this water to irrigation only.

This project is one of several major projects currently being built by Kuwait with the help of the Chinese government, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, which was signed with the Chinese state-owned construction and transport company affiliated with the Ministry of Transport for about 4 billion dollars in December.

These projects also include power and water stations, renewable energy, waste recycling, and the construction of new cities and residential areas.

Relations between China and Kuwait have strengthened in the past few years, and were visited by Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah when he was the Crown Prince in 2023. Several bilateral cooperation agreements in areas such as renewable energy and infrastructure were signed during the visit.
