Khaberni - The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jihad Al-Muhamid, announced the completion of the Ain Al-Basha Water System project, which is considered an important achievement in efforts to reduce water loss and improve the reliability of water supply in one of the most densely populated areas in Al-Balqa Governorate.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Water, the project was implemented with a total investment of 11.2 million dinars, including 9.5 million dinars provided by the US Embassy in Amman and 1.7 million dinars as a self-contribution from the Jordanian Water Authority, reflecting the depth of the strategic and long-term partnership between the two countries in facing one of Jordan's most significant challenges, water scarcity.
The Secretary-General stated that the project was designed to address challenges arising from aging infrastructure and high leak rates due to high pressure, which led to an increase in water loss, reaching about 77%, adversely affecting the ability of our Water Company to provide regular and reliable water supplies to the residents of the area.
The Secretary-General appreciated the support and funding provided by the US Embassy in Amman through the Loss Reduction Program, where rehabilitation works were executed to address these challenges in several areas of Ain Al-Basha. The project included the restructuring and rehabilitation of water networks in selected areas and the installation of 853 Ultrasonic type smart water meters with the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, aimed at improving measurement accuracy and monitoring, in addition to constructing a new water tank with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters at the highest point in the area, which allowed water supply through flow rather than pumping, and contributed to improving operational efficiency and sustainability of supply.
The project also focused on restructuring, rehabilitating, and insulating priority areas, in addition to introducing the Control and Monitoring System (SCADA) to enhance monitoring capabilities and operational performance and control.
The results of the project are already appearing, as the project will save 767,000 cubic meters annually, directly benefiting about 115,000 citizens in Ain Al-Basha. The project has also led to a reduction in operational expenses and energy costs by about 3 million dollars (2.1 million dinars) annually and reduced the response time for faults and complaints about breaks by 23%, enabling families to rely on a more regular and stable water supply program.
Al-Muhamid praised the efforts and support provided by the US Embassy in Amman, which contributed to it being a local achievement.
