Saudi Support Restores Electricity to Aden and Yemeni Provinces

Khaberni - The Yemeni authorities announced on Saturday that Saudi Arabia provided emergency fuel shipments that helped restart power stations that were out of operation in several areas, aiming to alleviate the electricity crisis and improve the level of basic services.

This comes after a Saudi announcement on Wednesday about signing an agreement to operate more than 70 power stations in Yemen, as part of efforts to support the sustainability of the electric current and improve the economic and living conditions in the country.

In this context, the Public Electricity Corporation in Aden, in a statement, welcomed the Saudi intervention, praising the provision of an urgent batch of diesel fuel.

The Corporation explained that these quantities enabled the restart of several generating stations that had been out of operation for months, in addition to compensating for the shortage caused by the stoppage of a solar power station operated by a company.

It added that the coordination, monitored by the leadership of the Arab Coalition in Aden and in cooperation with the local authority and the oil company, is likely to contribute to increasing the generation capacity and maintaining the stability of electricity service in the coming days.

According to the statement, starting from Sunday, the process of transporting diesel and mazut fuel from the Yemeni government company Petro Masila will begin, under an agreement signed between the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen and the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, to secure the operation of the stations in the temporary capital Aden and several benefiting provinces, after a shutdown that lasted several months.

The Yemeni Ministry of Electricity announced on Thursday that an Emirati company operating two solar power stations in Aden and Shabwa had stopped operating them suddenly and without prior coordination.

The media office of Aden Electricity Foundation stated that “Global South Utilities” turned off the stations while they were in operation, without notifying the ministry or the concerned parties.

For its part, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy confirmed that the suspension was made without technical justifications or prior operational notices, causing disarray in the generation system and directly affecting the stability of the service.

In July 2024, the Emirati company opened a solar power station in Aden with a production capacity of approximately 120 megawatts, as part of the projects supporting the electricity sector in Yemen.

Also, a solar power station project in Shabwa province was inaugurated with Emirati support on August 28, 2025, with a production capacity of about 53 megawatts.

Saudi Arabia plays a pivotal role in supporting the Yemeni government politically and economically, alongside sponsoring dialogue initiatives, the most notable being the Riyadh Conference, in efforts to enhance Yemen's unity, stability, and support state institutions.
