Khaberni - The Saudi channel "Al Sharq" said on Friday that the Sudanese government has received a new initiative led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States to end the war in Sudan.
The channel reported from informed sources that the new proposal to end the war is based on "a gradual approach starting with the declaration of a humanitarian truce, followed by a phase to cease hostilities, leading to a final and comprehensive ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces."
The sources also mentioned that the head of the transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, discussed the Saudi-American proposal with a number of his partners, during joint and separate meetings, as part of intensive consultations related to the initiative and the process to end the war.
The sources explained that the Sudanese government is still discussing and shaping its official response to the initiative, in preparation to present it to the U.S. administration, in the latest regional and international effort to end the ongoing war since April 2023.
The head of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan earlier this month hosted the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid bin Abdul Karim Al-Khuriji in Port Sudan, where they discussed the developments in Sudan and the region.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at that time that both sides discussed efforts to achieve peace in Sudan that would ensure its security and stability, and preserve its unity and legitimate institutions."
The Media Administration at the Sudanese Sovereignty Council also said at that time that the meeting addressed the peace initiative sponsored by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at addressing the Sudanese crisis and establishing peace in Sudan.
Since the outbreak of the war in April 2023, Saudi Arabia has played a role in bridging views between the Sudanese conflict parties, hosting the internationally recognized government and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah since May 2023, leading to what is known as the "Jeddah Agreement" to end the conflict.
