Khaberni - Power was completely cut off on Saturday evening in the city of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, plunging the city into darkness for a while.
Reuters agency reported that the outage was almost citywide, affecting most neighborhoods in Nuuk almost simultaneously.
In a statement, the company "Nukissiorfiit," the governmental provider of electricity and water in Greenland, cited an “accident” in the electrical system as the cause of this widespread outage, without revealing detailed technical information so far.
The company announced that it is working to operate backup emergency generators and restore power gradually to some areas, while continuing to work to locate and repair the fault in the transmission network.
The police have warned that the outage has affected some telephone lines and emergency communication, and asked residents to head directly to police stations in urgent cases if the phones do not work.
The power outage coincided with Greenland authorities updating emergency preparedness guidelines a few days ago, amid political controversy over US President Donald Trump's interest in imposing sovereignty over areas including US bases on the island, which led some on social media to speculate about a possible American attack.
However, so far there is no official evidence regarding the outage other than the company's statement, which confirmed that it was an "operational incident" under investigation, with continued efforts to fully restore power.
