12 thousand years old and contains no coffee beans The story of the oldest coffee substitute in the world

Khaberni - In the alleys of the ancient city of Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey, an aroma of a unique drink emanates, called "coffee" only by name, but in reality, it is a legacy deeply rooted in human history. It is "Menengiç" coffee (Menengiç kahvesi), a drink that has stood the test of thousands of years to compete with traditional Turkish coffee, offering a healthy, caffeine-free alternative loaded with the fragrance of the mountains.

The secret of wild fruits.. a taste that combines nuts with bitterness
Unlike regular coffee, "Menengiç" does not come from coffee beans but from the fruits of the "terebinth" tree, a type of wild pistachio that grows in the highlands. These fruits are carefully roasted and ground into a thick paste and then often mixed with hot milk to transform into a frothy rich beverage, characterized by its unique nutty flavor and a slight bitterness that tickles the senses, served in small cups that mimic the rituals of Turkish coffee.

The winter pharmacy.. the legacy of grandmothers in a cup
While tea and coffee are consumed for social interaction, "Menengiç" holds the place of "home remedy" in Gaziantep. Over generations, rural women have passed down the secret of this drink as an effective treatment for coughs, colds, and sore throats on cold winter nights. Although modern science is still uncovering its secrets, initial studies confirm that terebinth fruits are rich in proteins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it a traditional "superfood" that excellently supports the immune system.

From "Göbekli Tepe" to the European Union
This coffee was not created by chance; archaeologists believe its roots may date back to 12,000 years ago. At the nearby historical site of "Göbekli Tepe," remains of wild pistachios and ancient grinding stones were found, indicating that the region's inhabitants in the Neolithic era knew the secrets of this fruit and used it in their diet.

In honor of this ancient history, "Menengiç" received the geographical indication status from the European Union in the year 2024, officially cementing its organic relationship with Gaziantep’s cultural identity.

"Tahmis".. where history breathes
A visit to Gaziantep is not complete without sitting in "Tahmis" (Tahmis Kahvesi) café, established in 1635 and considered one of the oldest cafés in the world. There, "Menengiç" is not just sold as a beverage but also offered as a symbol of local pride and the resilience of Ottoman traditions against the wave of modern cafés.

From its historical use as spices, oils, and additions to sweets, "Menengiç" stands today as a bridge connecting profound historical food, folk medicine, and family traditions, proving that authenticity never loses its luster.
