Baghdad raises alert to secure its border with Syria

Khaberni  - The Iraqi News Agency, quoting an Iraqi official, reported that the completion rate of the concrete wall with Syria has reached 80%, indicating that the Islamic State (ISIS) members who crossed into Iraq from Syria are wanted for justice and will be placed in fortified prisons.

The Iraqi agency quoted Sabah Al-Nauman, the spokesperson for the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, saying today Saturday that the Commander in Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces has directed to complete the wall on the border between his country and Syria , noting that it "is about to be completed".

He explained that the wall is equipped with thermal cameras, and it is one of 3 main barriers that separate the Iraqi and Syrian borders, noting that the other two barriers are barbed wire and a trench at the border, and that the Commander in Chief conducted a field tour at the border to inspect the fortifications.

Prisoner Transfer

Al-Nauman said that the Iraqi government approved, during an emergency session of the Ministerial Council for National Security, a plan to transfer Islamic State detainees from Syria to Iraqi territory.

The government justified this decision on the grounds that keeping these detainees in unstable camps and detention centers in Syria, such as Al-Hol camp, poses an immediate security risk due to the possibility of their escape, especially since the group includes top leaders and "dangerous terrorists who have carried out bloody operations" in both countries.

With this step, Baghdad aims to complete the legal procedures against those wanted by the Iraqi judiciary under official arrest warrants, to compensate for the absence of competent judicial authorities at the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The transfer process includes detainees of Iraqi and foreign nationalities, as the Ministry of Justice prepared a plan to accommodate them in prisons described by the government as having high security fortifications and advanced capabilities that ensure the prevention of escape scenarios.

The spokesperson for the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces confirmed that the Joint Operations Command, in coordination with the specialized security agencies, will undertake the transfer operation, according to a strict timeline and security plan, to ensure their delivery to justice and to conclude their file of remaining outside the legal control of the Iraqi state, serving the stability of Iraqi and regional national security.
