Strong Earthquake Hits Northwest Turkey

Khaberni - The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced the recording of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, centered in the Sindirgi area of Balikesir province, at dawn on Saturday.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported that the earthquake struck at a depth of 11.04 kilometers.

The Turkish Disaster Management Authority confirmed that the tremor was felt by residents of Istanbul, Izmir, and other provinces.

The region of Sindirgi has experienced a series of earthquakes since August, with more than 12,000 earthquakes recorded in less than three months, including two earthquakes of 6.1 magnitude, and 45 earthquakes stronger than 4.0 magnitude.

The governor of Balikesir province (the epicenter), Ismail Ustaoglu, stated that there has been no negative situation so far as a result of the earthquake.

Ismail Ustaoglu explained that the field survey is ongoing by the Disaster Management Authority "AFAD" and other relevant Turkish institutions.

On his part, the Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya mentioned in a post on the platform "X" that the earthquake in Balikesir was also felt by residents of surrounding provinces.

The minister added in his post: "I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake.. May God protect our country and nation from disasters."
