For the first time Jordan ensures electricity access to Azraq camp throughout the day

Khaberni  -  As part of Jordan's continuous efforts to enhance the stability of refugees and improve the level of services provided to them, the spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Jordan, Yusuf Taha, said that thousands of refugee families in Azraq camp now enjoy round-the-clock electricity for the first time since the camp’s establishment.

Taha explained that this achievement was realized through the power distribution project, which was implemented in cooperation with relevant Jordanian authorities and UNHCR partners, and contributed to establishing a more just and efficient electricity management system within the camp, ensuring continuous power supply to families according to their daily needs.

He added that the project had a positive impact on various aspects of life within the camp, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare, where students can now study after sunset, and medical devices can operate uninterrupted, alongside enhancing safety and improving the living conditions for families.

He pointed out that by connecting the camp to the national electricity grid, Jordan has contributed to increasing the reliability of the electricity supply, after it was previously available for no more than 15 hours a day, which negatively affected the daily lives of the refugees.

He clarified that about 2000 families, comprising over 10,500 refugees, currently benefit from the 24-hour electricity, within an energy system that relies on the camp's solar power stations and the South Amman solar station, in addition to benefiting from the Green Corridor project, funded by the European Investment Bank, to support the integration of renewable energy and enhance the national electricity grid.

Taha confirmed that the UNHCR, in cooperation with the Jordanian authorities and the Electricity Distribution Company (EDCO), continues to work on expanding the distribution of power project to include a larger number of families, further cementing Jordan's role in supporting refugees and providing sustainable essential services within the camp.
