Khaberni - OpenAI has launched a new tool to predict the age of ChatGPT users in preparation to enable adult-specific content.
The tool relies on analyzing the usage patterns of the account to estimate whether the user is under 18 years old, and includes indicators such as the way and the time of use, in addition to the duration of the account's creation.
If the system predicts that the user is a minor, ChatGPT automatically activates protective measures to limit their exposure to sensitive content, such as sexual or violent materials, self-harm scenes, or any content that encourages dangerous and unhealthy behaviors.
OpenAI explained in a post on their official website that this approach is based on expert opinions and academic studies in child development, taking into account differences among teenagers in risk perception, impulse control, peer influence, and emotional regulation.
The user who is mistakenly classified as under 18 can confirm their actual age by uploading a government ID card, such as a driver's license or passport, or by sharing a personal selfie with the Persona identity verification service that uses artificial intelligence to determine age.
This feature comes before the launch of the "adult mode" expected in the coming weeks, which will allow users to create explicit and violent content using image, text, and video tools in ChatGPT, and to discuss sensitive topics that are currently restricted, while continuing to ban non-consensual content, deep fakes, and illegal actions.
The launch date for "adult mode" has not yet been specified, but Vidji Simo, head of the company's application department, stated last December that it is expected to be rolled out in the first quarter of 2026.
