Khaberni - The Danish island of Bornholm, located in the Baltic Sea off the southern coast of Sweden, experienced a widespread power outage this Wednesday morning, leading to more than 18,000 homes being affected by the power cut.
According to Danish media, the outage occurred around 10:16 AM local time, and initially, it was attributed to a fault in an undersea cable that connects the island to Sweden. However, the government official for the electricity network later clarified that the cable was intact and functioning normally.
A local company, which operates the local network in Bornholm, confirmed that the outage was due to an internal technical malfunction in its network, necessitating the precautionary disconnection of the undersea cable, which resulted in the power being cut off across the entire island.
The company added that the connection with the undersea cable had already been restored, and that work teams continue their efforts to gradually restart the electrical network, noting that the process could take several hours before power is fully restored.
During the outage, emergency services began operating a power station in the city of Rønne to secure temporary supplies, while a precise time has not yet been determined for restoring electricity to all areas of the island, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact technical reasons for the fault, amid official assurances that there are no indications of sabotage or external damage.
