OpenAI is preparing to launch its first AIpowered devices

Khaberni - "Axios" revealed that OpenAI is planning to launch its first product of smart devices next year.

Chris Lehane, the company's Chief of Global Affairs, stated that they are "on track" to unveil their first device in the second half of 2026.

"This will be the first product developed by OpenAI in cooperation with Apple's former designer, Jony Ive, with details of the product remaining confidential," according to Lehane.

According to previous reports, OpenAI is currently developing prototypes for small, screenless devices that are likely to be wearable and capable of interacting with users.

"Axios" quoted Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, as saying that the device will be considerably quieter than a smartphone, and he confirmed that users will be surprised by its simplicity.

Relatedly, the Financial Times reported that the device relies on receiving audio and visual signals from its surroundings and responding instantly to user requests, while Bloomberg added that the device will be equipped with a small projector for displaying content on surfaces.

As for the likely technical specifications, reports indicate that the device will allow communication with users through a camera, microphone, and speaker, and it is likely to contain multiple cameras. It is also expected to be suitably sized for office use, yet easy to carry and transport.

The Financial Times mentioned that the device might remain "continuously active" without needing a wake-up word, as sensors will gather data throughout the day to build a "memory" for the virtual assistant.

The sources clarified that OpenAI's ambition will not be limited to just one product. Instead, the company is currently exploring technical paths that include smart glasses, digital voice recorder, and wearable AI pin, as part of a broader vision to create an ecosystem of integrated devices relying on artificial intelligence, designed to help users in new ways of creativity and interaction.

The reports mentioned that OpenAI is planning to utilize Apple's manufacturing ecosystem in China, collaborating with suppliers such as Luxshare, which manufactures iPhone and AirPods, and Goertek, a key company that produces components for AirPods, HomePods, and Apple Watch.
