Khaberni - The European Commission announced today, Wednesday, its preliminary budget for humanitarian aid for the current year, which amounts to 1.9 billion euros.
The Commission noted in a memo that this comes at a time when 239 million people need help, while major donors are reducing their funding, explaining that the humanitarian aid provided by the Union saves lives when it is most needed, such as food and shelter in emergencies, basic healthcare, protection of the most vulnerable groups, and support for children's education in crisis areas.
The Commission announced that the aid includes 557 million euros for West and Central Africa, the Sahel region, the Lake Chad Basin, Northwest Nigeria, Central Africa, Southern Africa, and the Great Lakes region, and the greater Horn of Africa, with 448 million euros for the Middle East, especially the Gaza Strip in continuation of the fragile ceasefire reached last year, in addition to Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon.
