Khaberni - On Wednesday, the Sudanese army will discuss a new Saudi-American ceasefire proposal to end the war with the Rapid Support Forces, which has been ongoing for about three years, according to a government source from the French news agency.
The government source said, "The Security and Defense Council (chaired by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan) will convene on Wednesday to discuss the Saudi-American humanitarian ceasefire initiative and declare a ceasefire."
Diplomatic efforts over the past three years have failed to end the war or reach a ceasefire agreement between the two parties.
In November last year, the army commander rejected a ceasefire proposal presented by the International Quartet on Sudan, which includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.
Last week, Cairo hosted a high-level meeting that brought together the Quartet, the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and other countries to discuss peace efforts, which have not made much progress.
The war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing more than 11 million people, causing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the United Nations.
