Flick Confirms Ter Stegen to Girona

Khaberni - German Hansi Flick, the coach of Spanish Barcelona, confirmed on Tuesday the departure of his compatriot, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Girona on loan.

This comes after a decline in the role of the international goalkeeper, becoming the third choice in the Catalan team’s lineup behind Joan Garcia and Polish Wojciech Szczesny. As the World Cup 2026 approaches, 33-year-old ter Stegen is looking to get more playing time to prove himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for the German national team.

During the press conference designated for the Barcelona vs. Slavia Prague UEFA Champions League match on Wednesday, Flick said: "This morning, Marc said he would head to Girona".

He added, "I believe Marc is a great goalkeeper. We decided to go in a different direction for the future of the club, and I think it was the right decision. But I wish him all the best, as he is indeed a special goalkeeper".

He continued, "We might see him in the ranks of the German national team at the World Cup. I hope so and I think he has a good chance".

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach, and since then, he has succeeded in winning six titles of the Spanish league, and the Champions League title once, in addition to other titles.
