Expect the Jordanian government to reduce prices of petroleum derivatives

Khaberni - Special

Amer Al-Shoubaki, an economic researcher specializing in energy affairs, expects the Jordanian government to adopt a new decrease in fuel prices during the pricing of next February, continuing for the second consecutive month, with an anticipated two piastres decrease per liter each for gasoline 90 and gasoline 95, as a direct reflection of the ongoing downward pressures on the global energy markets.

Al-Shoubaki said that preliminary indicators based on global price movements also show an expected reduction in diesel price by about one piastre per liter, as well as a reduction in kerosene price by one piastre per liter.

Al-Shoubaki explained that this downward trend is directly pushed by American political pressures led by President Donald Trump towards reducing energy prices, and despite the escalating geopolitical risks in several production areas, the surplus in oil supply remains the decisive factor in directing the market, supported by the continued flow of Venezuelan oil into the markets, alongside additional supplies from OPEC countries and increased levels of spare production capacity.

He added that weak global demand, resulting from economic growth slowdown and ongoing uncertainty in the international economy, especially in Europe and China, has neutralized the traditional impact of geopolitical tensions, preventing prices from recording sharp increases.

Al-Shoubaki pointed out that the fixed tax imposed on petroleum derivatives in Jordan prevents the full reflection of actual global reductions on the local market, which limits the benefit to consumers and productive sectors from the decline in global prices.

Al-Shoubaki concluded by saying that the continuation of this tax deprives Jordanian citizens and the economy from low energy prices, keeping gasoline and diesel prices in Jordan among the highest in the Arab and regional levels, despite the clear reduction in global energy costs.

It is noteworthy that the government has approved during this month a significant reduction on all types of petroleum derivatives, including:
    •    Gasoline 90: -2 piastres/liter
    •    Gasoline 95: -2.5 piastres/liter
    •    Diesel: -6 piastres/liter
    •    Kerosene: -3 piastres/liter

The current prices are:
    •    Gasoline 90: 83 piastres/liter
    •    Gasoline 95: 105.5 piastres/liter
    •    Diesel: 64.5 piastres/liter
    •    Kerosene: 59 piastres/liter
