Khaberni - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, on Tuesday, pledged a significant increase in European investments in Greenland, and to work with the United States on "enhancing security in the Arctic".
Fon der Leyen said, "We are working on a massive increase in European investments in Greenland," in a speech delivered from the stage of the World Economic Forum in Davos, without mentioning any figures.
In her speech, von der Leyen also promised a "firm" response to repeated threats by U.S. President Donald Trump concerning Greenland and the increase in tariffs.
She stated, "We consider the American people not only allies but also friends. Forcing us into a spiral of tension benefits only the adversaries we are all committed to deterring."
She added: "We will work closely with Greenland and Denmark to determine how we can provide further support to the local economy and infrastructure."
She continued: "I am particularly thinking that we should allocate part of our increase in defense spending to create a European capability for icebreakers and other critical equipment for Arctic security."
The President of the European Commission also emphasized her desire to work with the United States and "all our partners" on "enhancing security in the Arctic."
She said, "This clearly serves our common interest, and we will increase our investments."
European leaders are scheduled to meet Thursday evening in Brussels at a special summit to discuss this issue.
