Khaberni - The Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship confirmed on Tuesday that electronic waste is increasing day by day, from unused phones to old computers.
The ministry stressed on the "X" platform the importance of the digital circular economy, which involves extending the life of devices and software through maintenance and updates instead of quick replacement.
It continued: "This includes reusing viable components and integrating recycled parts into a new production process."
The ministry stated that using viable components decreases the extraction of raw materials, reduces energy consumption, and minimizes carbon emissions.
"Every time we repair a device or reuse a part instead of disposing of it, we close the waste loop and conserve our resources and environment," according to the ministry.
Electronic waste consists of any disposed devices that contain an electrical outlet or battery. They may contain toxic additions or hazardous materials such as mercury, posing environmental and health risks.
Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman had earlier affirmed that electronic waste represents a significant environmental and economic challenge, with an annual volume of about 69,000 tons, of which only 10,000 tons are recycled.
He explained that the ministry is working according to the circular economy approach to transform waste into secondary resources, noting that 9 sites have been set up for the collection of electronic waste in Amman, Irbid, Zarqa, and Aqaba, in cooperation with local and international partners.
