Khaberni - A recent scientific study showed that saffron plant extract is beneficial in supporting memory, alleviating anxiety, and improving the metabolic process with age.
During the study, the researchers examined the effects of a standardized saffron extract containing precisely measured amounts of safranal and crocin, the two main active compounds in the plant, and conducted their experiments on aged mice to discover the effects of this extract on memory, increased anxiety, and metabolic disorders, and found that when the extract was added to food, it reached the bloodstream and had beneficial vital effects affecting all the aforementioned aspects.
The scientists found that high doses of this extract reduced anxiety levels and helped the brain recognize new objects and information, which is an indicator of improved memory function. These changes were accompanied by a reorganization of signaling molecules in the brain associated with stress, emotions, and neural flexibility.
According to the researchers, low doses of saffron extract helped slow down age-related weight loss and affected the genes regulating the metabolic processing of fats in the liver.
The researchers noted that the results they obtained were based on a study conducted on experimental animals, so they cannot be considered reliable before clinical trials are conducted on humans.
A previous study also indicated that saffron helps reduce inflammation and improve mood in patients with Parkinson's disease.
