What do you do if your car tire detaches while driving

Khaberni - Traffic safety experts have warned about the dangers of car tire detachment while driving, emphasizing that this type of accident is considered one of the most dangerous vehicle malfunctions, which may lead to loss of control and severe accidents (God forbid), especially at high speeds. This scenario is radically different from a punctured tire, which usually gives the driver enough time to handle it safely.

Despite the lack of specific guidelines on how to deal with a complete tire detachment, the experts' recommendations related to tire malfunctions and blowouts offer a clear framework for safe action in such emergency situations.

According to experts, the first step when a tire detaches is to firmly hold the steering wheel, as the vehicle is likely to experience strong vibrations that could affect its balance. It is advised to avoid sudden braking, as this could cause the vehicle to swerve or overturn (God forbid). Instead, gradually lift the foot off the fuel pedal to slow down the car smoothly, steering it steadily and looking for the nearest safe place to stop on the side of the road.

After stopping, it is crucial to immediately turn on the hazard lights to alert other drivers, and to seek help from emergency services or roadside assistance, emphasizing not to attempt to continue driving under any circumstances, due to the severe risks involved.

These guidelines largely conform to the recommendations of traffic authorities around the world, which emphasize the importance of turning on the hazard lights immediately when a malfunction occurs, and directing the car straight ahead while slowing down, rather than attempting to maneuver or change direction sharply.

Specialists have confirmed that the psychological factor plays a crucial role in such situations, pointing out that maintaining calm and controlling nerves can be the difference between survival and disaster, not just for the driver, but for other road users as well.

Regarding the reasons for tire detachment, experts explained that incorrect installation is the most common cause, where wheel nuts may not be tightened to the required torque, leading to them gradually loosening during driving. Worn or damaged nuts can cause the same problem, even when adhering to legal speeds, especially if the car experiences sudden vibrations due to a bump or hole in the road.

Experts advised drivers to monitor tire conditions after any replacement or rotation, and to recheck the wheel nuts after traveling a distance ranging between 50 and 100 miles, adhering to the torque specifications endorsed by the manufacturer. They also noted that some car companies have started adopting intelligent systems, like the loose wheel indicator, which can detect problems early and alert the driver before worse occurs.
