Khaberni - WhatsApp platform is preparing to take a crucial step in the way its users deal with GIF images inside the app, through a technical change that is likely to affect the experience of millions around the world, by dispensing with one of the most famous providers of animated content, and replacing it with an entirely new platform.
According to what was revealed by WABetaInfo, a site specialized in monitoring WhatsApp updates, the application is currently working on modifying the mechanism of searching for GIF images, by replacing the Tenor service with the Klipy platform as a new default provider of animated content within the app.
This change first appeared in the latest beta release of WhatsApp on the iOS system, which bears the number 26.2.10.70, and is available to beta testers through the TestFlight program, indicating that the feature is still under development and has not yet been launched in the official version.
This move by WhatsApp comes at a sensitive time, after the Tenor platform officially announced its intention to completely stop its API services from June 30, 2026, and has already stopped accepting new developer registrations.
This decision has put many applications, including WhatsApp, in need of quickly finding an alternative to ensure the continuity of GIF sharing service without interruption, which prompted the green platform to move early.
The new alternative for GIF images
According to leaks reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently working on integrating the Klipy platform, which specializes in providing a large library of GIF images, in addition to stickers and memes, and offers an official programming interface that allows for easy searching and sharing of animated content.
It is planned that current Tenor users will be automatically transferred to Klipy without the need to take any manual action on their part, in a step aimed at maintaining ease of use.
Among the anticipated changes, WhatsApp will start displaying the Klipy watermark on GIF images shared within conversations, to inform users about the new source of animated content, instead of Tenor.
Giphy service within WhatsApp
Currently, WhatsApp allows searching for GIF images through Giphy and Tenor services, with availability differing based on region or account settings, as some users depend on only one service.
After Tenor officially stops, users who were relying on it will be directed to Klipy automatically, while users who use Giphy inside the app will not be affected.
Collective shift before the deadline
This shift is not limited to WhatsApp only, as other platforms that rely on Tenor, such as Discord, have started taking similar steps and moving to Klipy, in preparation for the final discontinuation date of the service.
Although WhatsApp has not yet announced an official date for launching this change, predictions based on information from WABetaInfo suggest that the transition process will be completed before July 1, 2026, to avoid any disruption in the GIF sharing service within the app.
