Khaberni - The Minister of Agriculture, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Food Security, Saib Khreisat, confirmed on Monday that food security and nutrition indicators in Jordan are continuously showing improvement according to the latest accredited international reports.
Khreisat said that Jordan has achieved advanced and positive results on the 2025 Global Hunger Index issued by the "Concern" and "Fight Hunger" global organizations, where Jordan advanced to rank 54 out of (123) countries that have sufficient data to calculate the index, compared to rank (59) in the 2024 report, with the index value decreasing to 10.3 points from 12.0 points last year, reflecting a strong and direct improvement in the kingdom's overall index.
He added that these results confirm that Jordan is moving forward steadily, and that the overall picture of food security in the Kingdom is positive and strong compared to many countries in the region.
He explained that the overall improvement in Jordan's Global Hunger Index primarily resulted from a decrease in the rate of malnutrition, while the rest of the index components remained stable, which reflects a tangible development in Jordan's ability to improve living standards through enhancing food availability and access.
Khreisat emphasized that one of the most notable aspects of Jordan's results is the significant improvement in Jordan's food security indicators in the 2025 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in partnership with the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Children's Fund. The report shows that Jordan has seen a notable improvement in several food security indicators, especially a significant improvement in the rate of malnutrition, which is one of the most influential indicators in international measurement.
He noted that the rate decreased from 17.9% during 2021–2023 to 14.3% during 2022–2024, reflecting a real improvement in food availability and access. This development reflects the efficacy of government policies and the efficiency of the national system in maintaining food security even under pressing global conditions.
He pointed out that the nutrition indicators for children in Jordan according to this report are excellent and very low, which gives a clear indication of food and nutritional stability. Child wasting has remained stable at a low level (2.3%), and these particular indicators reflect the strength of the food and health reality, as they are among the most sensitive indicators to any deterioration. Jordan's figures are very reassuring."
Khreisat also mentioned that despite the global rise in prices, recent figures confirm the success of government policies in addressing the impact of rising prices, as the data showed that the proportion of people unable to afford a healthy diet decreased from 11.5% in 2023 to 10.7% in 2024, while the number of people unable to bear these costs decreased by 7.7%.
Khreisat added that the SOFI report also shows that the percentage of the population unable to access an adequate dietary pattern in Jordan is estimated at about 0.1 percent, a good condition compared to the global average of 4.6%. The cost of an adequate diet in Jordan is estimated at about $0.64 per day, compared to the global average of $0.79 per day, and these results "send a clear message that the measures taken have contributed to improving the situation of families, and that the indicators are moving in the right direction."
He indicated that Jordan will continue to enhance these excellent results by protecting lower-income groups, expanding the impact of support programs, supporting local agricultural production, improving the efficiency of supply chains, enhancing the quality of dietary patterns, and establishing the concept of healthy food.
Khreisat confirmed that "food security in Jordan is strong and stable, and its indicators are excellent according to international standards, with ongoing policy development to maintain this performance and enhance it."
