AlSaaydeh Shortening Daylight Hours Increased Electricity Consumption and Bills

Khaberni - Ziad Al-Saaydeh, President of the Board of Commissioners of the Energy Sector Regulatory Commission, confirmed on Monday that the issue of electrical loss was not discussed during the meeting with the Parliamentary Energy Committee.

During his statements to "Al-Mamlaka" channel, Al-Saaydeh denied what was attributed to MP Qasim Al-Quba'i regarding this loss, stating that all sessions related to this matter are filmed and recorded, and he retains a list with names, noting that no employee from the electricity companies was present in those sessions.

He pointed out that the electrical loss is approved by the Commission, and if the companies do not meet the loss value on the network, they are subject to fines.

Al-Saaydeh added that the Commission conducts strict and unprogrammed supervisory rounds on electricity companies' projects to ensure compliance with standards.

Regarding the rise in electricity bills, Al-Saaydeh said the increase is due to natural consumption due to shorter daylight hours, which necessitates the use of lighting during the day, in addition to increased use of electric heating and water heating processes, which are factors contributing to the rise in the electricity bill.

Al-Saaydeh explained that the number of complaints received by the Commission is less than the normal rate, noting that no complaints were recorded from either the Aqaba or the Jordan Valley regions.

Concerning the electricity tariff, Al-Saaydeh confirmed that the tariff between the first and second tiers is calculated separately, confirming that there is currently no decision about adjusting the tariff or recalculating electricity costs.

Al-Saaydeh clarified that the cost of the electric system is higher than the current pricing, as the system's cost is about 12 piasters per subscriber and is sold to most sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and hotel sectors, which are subsidized.

The three electricity distribution companies (Jordan Electricity Company, Irbid Electricity Company, and the Electricity Distribution Company) "categorically denied" MP Qasim Al-Quba'i's statements regarding the distribution companies approving the loading of "electrical loss" onto subscribers' bills during December and January.

The companies stated in a report on Monday that they did not participate in the aforementioned meeting with the Parliamentary Energy Committee, nor issued any statement or official stance indicating the approval of such a measure, emphasizing that the official session records prove that no representatives from the three companies attended that meeting, and what was stated in the circulated statements is inaccurate and does not reflect the true events.

The companies explained that the calculation of electricity bills is done solely based on the officially approved electric tariff by the Energy Sector Regulatory Commission, and based on the actual consumption recorded on the meter only, without adding any burdens or percentages or items related to electrical loss, confirming that there is no mechanism or decision that authorizes directly or indirectly charging the subscribers the cost of the loss.

Member of the Parliamentary Energy Committee MP Qasim Al-Quba'i confirmed that electricity companies admitted to distributing electrical energy loss on citizens' bills during December and January of each year, during a meeting of the Energy Committee that discussed a number of issues related to the energy sector and the high electricity prices in Jordan.

During the program "Economic Sunday," Al-Quba'i said that the price of energy in Jordan is high compared to the income of the citizen, and is "among the highest" at the Arab countries level, confirming that this is "no secret."
