Mass defections within SDF ranks and Syrian army takes control of the Euphrates Dam

Khaberni - "Al-Ikhbariya Syrian" channel reported from local sources that more than 400 elements of the "Syrian Democratic Forces" defected in Raqqa and joined what is known as the "People's Uprising".

The source mentioned that "more than 400 SDF fighters in Raqqa decided to leave the organization and join the People’s Uprising".

In a related context, an SANA news agency reporter in Raqqa reported that two civilians were killed due to gunfire by "SDF" elements in Wadi Street and near Naim roundabout in the city.

SANA also published photographed scenes from the Panorama roundabout in northern Deir ez-Zor countryside, claiming they were taken after SDF elements fled the area and left their weapons behind.

In a significant development today, Sunday, January 18, 2026, the Syrian Arab Army announced the retaking of the Euphrates Dam, which had been under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces for years.

The Syrian Ministry of Energy, through its account on the "X" platform, confirmed that "units of the Syrian Arab Army tightened control of the Euphrates Dam this morning, and the management and operation of the dam facilities were handed back to the technical staff and specialized engineers".
