Jordan in a Week Steps Among Internal and External Turbulence
Author: د. أيمن الخزاعلة

Jordan witnessed last week a series of important developments on the economic, social, and political scales, reflecting the vitality of the domestic scene and the complexity of balancing between local challenges and regional and international pressures. The government continued to place the Jordanian citizen at the core of its priorities, by expanding the social safety net to include hundreds of thousands of families through direct support and integrated services via an advanced national platform, in a step that reaffirms the state's interest in ensuring a dignified life for the citizen and enhancing transparency and accountability in implementation.

Economically, inflation continued to pressure the purchasing power of families, having recorded a rise of about 1.77% for the year 2025, despite some stability in general indicators. In the markets, gold prices decreased slightly in line with global market movements, while tourism sector indicators showed positive signs, with more than 75,000 visits during the first half of January 2026, reflecting the vital role of this sector in supporting the national economy.

On the social level, high school students concluded their supplementary exams, ending an important phase in the lives of the largest segment of Jordanian youth, amid anticipation for the announcement of the results and determining paths for higher education or entering the labor market. Meanwhile, the cultural life continued its activity through literary and social events that reflect the diversity of the Jordanian society and its determination to preserve its cultural identity.

Internationally, the US's classification of some branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organizations in several countries, including Jordan, sparked a national debate on foreign policy and national decision-making sovereignty, at a time when the Kingdom maintains balanced strategic relations with the European Union and regional and international partners, continuously seeking to maintain internal stability and avert potential risks from international tensions.

Politically, government leadership emphasized that its international relations strategy is built on the basis of Jordan's interest and stability first, while social movements, such as the refusal of some tribes to receive foreign ambassadors, reflect the vivacity of the society and its strong sense of sovereignty and national dignity, requiring a precise reading from political institutions away from superficiality.

All these developments reflect a delicate transitional phase, requiring the ability to balance between internal security and stability, economic reform, and maintaining balanced external relations. Jordan possesses true strengths in its geographic location, cultural history, and human potential, but real success lies in effective implementation that is felt by the citizen in their daily life. Economic challenges require practical measures to curb inflation and support purchasing power, while social and political challenges require enhancing transparency, opening up to community dialogue, and establishing a culture of justice and equal opportunities. Under this equation, Jordan remains capable of creating stability, not just managing it, achieving its citizens' vision for a unified, secure, and sustainable future.
