Reasons for Hair Split Ends and Treatments

Khaberni - Dr. Vladislav Tkatchiov, a hair specialist, indicates that hair split ends are not merely a cosmetic defect, but are the result of external and internal factors, including poor hair care, dry air, and poor nutrition.

According to him, hair damage is due to the cumulative effects of the external environment—mechanical, chemical, and physical factors. The longer the hair, the more it is exposed to micro-damage, especially if it is naturally fine and dry.

He says: "The hair is continuously exposed to sunlight, wind, hairstyling products, and frequent washing. These factors strip away fats and ceramides (waxy lipid molecules), dry out the scalp, and disrupt the natural balance of the hair. Added to this are the harsh ingredients in cosmetics—alcohol, dry shampoos, and dyes, as well as treatments like keratin straightening or perming. All this makes the hair brittle and dry."

Internal factors include iron deficiency, thyroid diseases, or lack of protein and calories, and some skin conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, dry sebum, and psoriasis. In the absence of these issues, hair care and scalp hydration should be emphasized, along with choosing the appropriate shampoo.

He says: "If the health is good, the woman should choose the right hair care products and the optimal length for it. For example, if the hair starts to split after growing 40 cm, it is necessary to trim 2-3 centimeters regularly and not let it grow more than that. This will maintain hair health and prevent split ends."

The expert stresses that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, as the structure and strength of hair depend on genetic factors, thus the ideal hair care is specifically designed for each individual.
