Trump Offers to Mediate between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Renaissance Dam

Khaberni - In the wake of the ongoing dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the dams on the tributaries of the Nile, the American President Donald Trump offered yesterday (Friday) to mediate between the two countries.

In a message sent by Trump to the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, where he praised President el-Sisi's efforts in mediating between Israel and Hamas, Trump offered his services as a mediator in the case of the Renaissance Dam which was inaugurated by Ethiopia last September.

The mentioned dam was built on the Blue Nile, one of the important tributaries of the Nile River, and was a massive national project for the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Egypt asserts that the dam threatens its Nile water supplies, the country's main source of water, and considers it an existential issue. On the other hand, Ethiopia assures that Egypt's water rights are not violated.

All negotiation attempts between the two countries have failed so far. In May last year, Egypt expressed its doubts about a previous American offer to mediate between it and Ethiopia, fearing that this might be an attempt to pressure it to allow a mass flow of Gaza residents through its territory.
