Khaberni - The artificial intelligence model named "Nano Banana" from Google for image creation has gained wide popularity due to its high precision in photo editing and creation, but the company had not previously revealed where it got the name for this model.
According to an official blog from Google DeepMind, a Google subsidiary, the name "Nano Banana" resulted from intensive efforts late into the night.
In July last year, the Google DeepMind team was rushing to present the model to the "LMArena" platform, a public site where anonymous AI models are tested and voted on by users. The technical name was already determined as "Gemini 2.5 Flash Image," but the team had no symbolic name.
At around 2:30 AM, product manager Naina Raisinghani received an urgent request to come up with any name, and quickly, so she concocted "Nano Banana" which had no meaning at all, and it was immediately approved, according to a report by "Android Authority," a technology news site, reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".
Now it turns out that the name is actually a mix of her personal nicknames; as some friends call her "Naina Banana," and others call her "Nano" -because she is short and loves computers- and the model itself was a modified version of a "Flash" release. By combining all these elements, the result was the name "Nano Banana" for the image creation model.
The model quietly appeared on the "LMArena" platform in early August, where it amazed users with its photo editing capabilities, and when users noticed the name, social media sites buzzed with the matter.
The combination of the massive power of artificial intelligence and the amusing symbolic name contributed to the widespread dissemination of the model, propelling "Nano Banana" to the forefront of global photo editing rankings.
With the fame garnered by the model under its symbolic name "Nano Banana," Google named the "Gemini 3 Pro Image" model for photos "Nano Banana Pro".
