Khaberni - The Google "Gemini" chatbot will start linking information from email messages and traditional search logs to customize its responses, within the framework of the technology giant's efforts to tailor its artificial intelligence products to better understand its users.
The Alphabet subsidiary launched on Wednesday a new feature that enables the chatbot to perform "logical analysis" across various Google applications, such as Photos and YouTube watch history, to provide personalized insights.
This step represents a strong push by Google to leverage its wide range of popular products to gain a competitive edge over rivals such as OpenAI in the race to attract artificial intelligence users.
Animesh Sivaramakrishnan, product manager for Gemini customization, told the Financial Times, "We have always wanted to build a personal assistant that truly helps in those critical moments, and to develop Gemini from an assistant limited to transactions into one that understands you better over time."
More specific responses
Thanks to access to this information, in addition to the conversation history, Gemini can provide more specific responses instead of a general answer.
For example, when a user plans a vacation, the Gemini app will be able to know—based on its understanding of previous trips through his photos or emails—that he might prefer outdoor activities, has children, or favorite hotels, and will use this information to prepare a specially designed trip itinerary.
Sivaramakrishnan said, "We are now able to understand the context and nuances in your most important applications, so that interaction becomes seamless and natural with someone who knows you, instead of just creating ready-made alerts."
Feature for subscribers
The customization feature will be available to premium service subscribers in the United States starting this week, with plans to expand globally and make it available to free users in the coming months.
Artificial intelligence teams have intensified their efforts over the past year to improve memory, launching updates that enable chatbots to store more user information to tailor their responses.
This step is important for helping leading artificial intelligence teams attract users in the competitive market of chatbots and agents, as well as a means of generating revenue from this advanced technology.
This move by Google could provide a competitive advantage over rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, who do not have the same level of access to personal data.
Last year, OpenAI and Anthropic allowed users to log into their Gmail and Google Calendar accounts, in addition to other apps, to provide a broader context for responses.
