United Nations Removing 60 million tons of rubble in Gaza requires 7 years

Khaberni - The Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, Jorge Moreira da Silva warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, confirming that the removal of rubble could take more than 7 years.

Da Silva said in a statement after his visit to the sector on Thursday: "I have just returned from Gaza where the humanitarian crisis is worsening, people are exhausted and shocked, living in despair."

He pointed out that the amount of rubble in the sector had exceeded 60 million tons, equivalent to the load of about 3,000 container ships, noting that every person in Gaza is surrounded by an average of 30 tons of rubble.

Da Silva stressed that harsh winter conditions and heavy rains exacerbate the suffering and despair of residents, emphasizing that recovering two million people and restoring services urgently require safe shelter, fuel, and debris removal.

He described the scale of the destruction as "unbelievable," saying: "Homes, schools, clinics, roads, and water and electricity networks were destroyed."

He warned that children who have been out of school for three years "are at risk of becoming a lost generation," noting that "their daily lives are fraught with loss and trauma."
