UN Official Gaza Rubble Removal May Take Over 7 Years

Khaberni - Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UN Office for Project Services, said that there is more than 60 million tons of rubble in Gaza, and its removal might take over 7 years.

In a statement following his visit to Gaza last Thursday, da Silva added, "I have just returned from Gaza where the humanitarian crisis is worsening; the people are exhausted and shocked, living in a state of despair."

He noted that the ongoing harsh winter conditions and heavy rains increase the suffering and despair of the population.

da Silva emphasized that the recovery of two million people in areas destroyed by Israeli attacks, and the restoration of services, urgently require providing safe shelters, fuel, and debris removal.

He mentioned that the rubble in Gaza is equivalent to the load of about 3,000 container ships, and today every person in Gaza is surrounded by an average of 30 tons of rubble, and it is likely that the removal of this debris will take more than 7 years.

The UN official described the level of destruction in Gaza as "incredible."

He added: "Homes, schools, clinics, roads, and water and electricity networks have been destroyed."

He continued: "The daily lives of children are fraught with loss and trauma, and children who have been out of school for three years are at risk of becoming a lost generation."
