US officials reported today, Thursday, that President Donald Trump requested military assets in the region be put on readiness in case he orders a major attack against Iran, according to "Wall Street Journal".
According to the officials, Trump's advisors said the United States would need more military power in the Middle East, either to carry out a widespread strike or to protect the US forces in the region and allies such as Israel in case Iran retaliates.
Wider Conflict
US officials also informed the White House that it is unlikely that the Iranian regime would fall after an extensive bombing campaign, but it might lead to igniting a broader conflict.
According to officials, the US president is monitoring how Iran deals with the protesters before deciding on attacking Tehran.
They also noted that it is expected that Trump will order the Department of Defense (Pentagon) to send the aircraft carrier "USS Abraham Lincoln" from the South China Sea to the Middle East, pointing out that the journey once started, is expected to take about a week.
