Khaberni - The Iraqi government announced this Thursday evening its categorical rejection of the use of its territory or airspace to target any country or to involve Iraq in conflicts that do not serve its people.
This came in a statement by the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Noaman, who said: "In light of the accelerating regional developments, and the accompanying escalation and threats that affect the security and stability of the region, the Republic of Iraq confirms its firm and principled position rejecting the use of its territory, airspace, or territorial waters as a launch pad for any military operations targeting any country."
He added that this position "is based on the provisions of the Iraqi Constitution and the government's policy based on respecting the sovereignty of states and non-intervention in their internal affairs," clarifying that "Iraq is fully committed not to allow its territory to be used as a theater for threatening the security and stability of all regional neighboring countries, or to be dragged into conflicts that do not serve the interests of its people."
The Iraqi government reiterated in its statement "its call to all concerned parties to exercise restraint and prioritize the language of dialogue and avoid escalation and serious work on resolving disputes by peaceful and diplomatic means, in accordance with the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, and to spare the region further tension and instability."
This statement comes at a time when the region is experiencing escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, amid fears of the extension of regional conflicts. The Iraqi position is part of a policy aimed at maintaining relative neutrality and avoiding drifting into alliances or conflicts that could reignite internal violence or undermine the fragile stability of the country.
