America Suspends Visa Procedures for 75 Countries Including Arab Nations

Khaberni - "Fox News" reported that the U.S. Department of State has decided to suspend all visa issuance procedures for the citizens of 75 countries, including Arab nations, as a measure aimed at intensifying the scrutiny on applicants who may become a "burden on the public assistance system" in the United States.

According to an internal memo viewed by "Fox News Digital", American consulates have been instructed to deny visa applications based on current laws, until a comprehensive reevaluation of screening and verification procedures is completed.

The list of countries affected by the decision includes Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, Yemen, among other nations.

The network noted that the suspension will begin from January 21, continuing indefinitely until the State Department completes the review of visa application processing policies.

Emphasis on the "public charge" criterion

"Fox News" mentioned that Somalia has undergone increased scrutiny by U.S. federal authorities, following a major fraud case disclosed in Minnesota, related to the misuse of taxpayer-funded assistance programs, with several individuals involved of Somali origin.

In November 2025, the State Department sent a circular to its missions worldwide, requesting consulates to apply stricter rules under what is known as the "public charge" clause in immigration law.

The new guidelines state that visas should be denied to applicants believed to potentially rely on government assistance, taking into account various factors, such as health status, age, proficiency in the English language, financial status, and even the potential need for long-term medical care.

The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Tommy Bigot, said in a statement: "The department will use its established legal powers to deem some applicants ineligible for immigration if they are likely to become a burden on the United States or exploit the generosity of the American people."

He added, "Immigration from these 75 countries will be temporarily suspended while immigration procedures are reviewed, with the goal to prevent the entry of foreigners who may depend on welfare and public assistance programs."
