Khaberni - A former officer in the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet) revealed his role in foiling an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to the Hebrew newspaper "Maariv", Gonin Ben Yitzhak, who currently works as a lawyer, explained that he accidentally stumbled upon information about a government-opposing activist's intention to assassinate Netanyahu, and he immediately informed the Shin Bet.
In an interview with the newspaper’s podcast, he mentioned that he is among the most vocal opponents of the current government's policies and regularly participates in protests against it, but when he heard from a close friend about the activist’s plans, he did not hesitate to intervene to prevent the crime, although he did not know her personally at the time.
He added that the authorities arrested the activist and interrogated her after his report, confirming at the same time that he was deeply shocked when he later discovered her identity, as it turned out she was someone he knew, and he said: "It is a real tragedy."
Ben Yitzhak did not just mention this incident, but went on to say that the idea of assassinating Netanyahu is not rare among some protest circles, noting that he knew a number of activists who planned to target him or other government leaders.
Despite his pride in his past security achievements, including recruiting an agent within the top ranks of Hamas during his service in the Shin Bet, he expressed deep discontent with how the Israeli security agencies treat him today, explaining that they are persecuting him because of his opposition to the government.
