Revolutionary treatment restores sight to a woman blinded by a rare eye condition

Khaberni - A British woman regained her ability to see after losing her sight due to a rare condition known as "eye pressure drop," thanks to a pioneering medical treatment conducted at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Nicky Gay (47) suffers from a sharp decrease in eye pressure, a condition that leads to the collapse of the eye structure and distortion of vision. She was the first patient to undergo an experimental treatment involving the injection of a low-cost gel inside the eye, according to "The Sun" newspaper.

“Astonishing results” and gradual improvement
Gay said that the results of the treatment were "astonishing," explaining that the issue was not with the optic nerve or the nerve signals to the brain, but with the collapse of the eye’s shape itself, which prevented normal vision.

She added that the eye in this case "collapses as if it were an empty paper bag," indicating that vision was present behind this structural distortion.

Periodic injections and hope of regaining driving
The doctors explained that they used a transparent, colorless substance known as "hydroxypropyl methylcellulose," where it was injected inside the eye every two weeks over the course of a full year, contributing to the restoration of eye pressure and gradual improvement of its structure.

Gay had to give up her driving license in 2021 due to the deterioration of her vision, but she expressed hope of regaining it soon, noting that the improvement in her health condition enabled her to return to important life activities, including going on a skiing trip with her son.
