Khaberni - UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to join the group planned by US President Donald Trump to arrange the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Trump will chair the «Gaza Peace Council» which will temporarily take charge of the region and make decisions related to its reconstruction, as reported by the British newspaper «The Times». The Council, which includes world leaders, will discuss ways to disarm Hamas, establish a technocrat government, and attract investments.
Trump may reveal the names of the council members this week. The «Sunday Times» had revealed last weekend that the US president invited Starmer to join.
A senior British official said that the council’s first meeting is expected to be held next week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
In his talk on Sunday about the group, Trump said: «Basically, it includes the most important leaders from the most important countries. We take the top leaders and the top countries, and that is the Peace Council».
The White House explained that the council «will set the framework and manage the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza», in addition to providing «ongoing supervision and oversight» over a future government in Gaza that includes «qualified Palestinians and international experts».
The council will include leaders from countries such as Germany, Italy, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. A source at the British Prime Minister’s office said that «no formal invitation» has been sent to Starmer yet, given that discussions are still ongoing, and a final decision has not been made.
The White House announced in September (September) that former British Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair would join the council, although his participation is now uncertain after reports that Middle Eastern countries objected to the addition of the man who sent British troops to participate in the American invasion of Iraq.
Starmer has built a close relationship with Trump, which helped in securing the lowest level of tariffs that the US president imposed on Britain. Despite their disagreement over the UK's decision to recognize the state of Palestine last year, it seems that this did not affect their relationship.
One of Starmer's allies said that his efforts were crucial in the United States agreeing last week to provide preliminary security guarantees to Ukraine in case a peace agreement is reached with Russia. He added: «Without Keir, that wouldn't have happened».
The prime minister defended his focus on foreign policy in a speech he gave on Monday evening to Labour MPs, after some accused him of neglecting domestic priorities due to his frequent travels abroad.
Starmer said: «The cost of living crisis will not be solved by isolation. One thing has become completely clear, we are entering a world very different from the one we grew up in. In such a volatile world, you have to be in the field and present to address the issues that matter to people».
