Kuwait Achieves Leap in Gas Production

Khaberni - Kuwait is witnessing a qualitative leap in the production of free gas with ongoing exploration operations to achieve the desired strategic plan. Informed sources revealed that Kuwait Oil Company has succeeded in setting a new gas production record by the end of 2025, having surpassed the barrier of 720 million cubic feet per day.

The sources said that Kuwait aims to increase exploration and production of non-associated natural gas, with the first free gas well discovered in 2005 in Umm Niqa, northern Kuwait. They explained that the company is following strategic plans and is expected to reach a production of between 900 and950 million cubic feet per day of free gas by the end of this year, aiming for a target of one billion cubic feet.

The sources indicated that gas production in Kuwait is competitive, as it extracts with it quantities of high-quality light oil, which commands high global prices. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation blends it with Kuwaiti export crude to improve its purity for international shipments.

«Kuwait Oil» continues to expand its relationships with international and national oil companies, oil service companies, and distinguished global institutions in technology and innovation, to enhance operational efficiency, technological advancement, research and development, and capacity building needed to achieve the company's strategy and the oil sector's 2040 goals. The country possesses significant capabilities to increase its gas production, with substantial infrastructure capabilities, enabling increased production and possession of large gas reserves estimated at63 trillion cubic feet, moving forward to become a major market for liquefied natural gas.

Kuwait Oil Company recently announced the discovery of a new offshore natural gas field, with initial estimates indicating the presence of a trillion cubic feet and about350 million barrels of oil equivalent. The new marine field «Jazah» is the company's third marine discovery, following the fields «Al-Nukhaza» and «Al-Julaia» within its offshore exploration drilling project.

It is expected that Kuwait's demand for liquefied natural gas14 million tons annually by 2035.

Here are the details:

Concurrent with the ongoing exploration of free gas in the country, aiming to achieve the strategic production plan and increase oil and gas reserves, informed sources revealed that Kuwait Oil Company succeeded in setting a new gas production record by the end of 2025, having managed to surpass 720 million cubic feet per day.

The same sources said that Kuwait aims to increase exploration and production of non-associated natural gas, with the first free gas well discovered in 2005 in Umm Niqa, northern Kuwait. They explained that the company follows established strategic plans, and it is expected to reach gas production of 900 - 950 million cubic feet per day of free gas by the end of this year, eventually achieving the goal of one billion cubic feet.

Increasing production

The sources reported that the company is currently seeking to expand its relations with international and national oil companies, oil service providers, and distinguished global institutions in technology and innovation. This expansion will contribute to enhancing operational efficiency, and technological progress, research and development, and capacity building needed to achieve the company's strategy and the oil sector's 2040 goals.

They also stated that Kuwait has substantial capabilities to increase its gas production, and it boasts large resources within the gas sector infrastructure, enabling further production increases. In addition, the country holds large gas reserves estimated at63 trillion cubic feet and is moving forward in transitioning to becoming a major market for liquefied natural gas.

Significant returns are expected

The country's plans and endeavours to double its natural gas production, particularly shale gas, aim to meet local needs and export the surplus, which will bring significant positive returns to the local economy. Exploiting gas reserves will enable it to overcome economic challenges.

Kuwait Oil Company announced the discovery of a new offshore natural gas field, with preliminary estimates indicating a trillion cubic feet and about 350 million barrels of oil equivalent. The new marine field «Jazah» is the company's third marine discovery, following the fields «Al-Nukhaza» and «Al-Julaia» as part of its offshore exploration drilling project.

It is anticipated that Kuwait's demand for liquefied natural gas 14 million tons annually by the year 2035, with Kuwait Oil opening a facility with a capacity of 22 million tons annually in 2021, which is the first permanent facility to receive liquefied natural gas in the region, enabling the country to enter the global market to support its economy and enhance plans for transitioning to clean energy.

Competitive production

The sources noted that gas production in Kuwait is competitive, as it is accompanied by the extraction of high-quality light oil, which commands high global prices. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation blends it with Kuwaiti export crude to enhance its purity.

Challenging reservoirs

The sources indicated that oil reservoirs in Kuwait, which contain free gas, are "extremely difficult" and reach very deep underground. These harsh conditions require specialized production equipment, which is imported from manufacturers to match the nature of Kuwait's fields.

It was added that Kuwait Oil Company annually drills between 22 and23 free gas wells each year, and the company has 170 active wells.
