Death of 6 Skiers After Avalanches in the Alps

Khaberni - 3 skiers died on Sunday in 3 separate avalanches while they were skiing off-piste in the French Alps, raising the victim toll for the weekend to 6 dead, according to the announcements from ski resort administrations and local authorities.

La Plagne resort reported that a British skier in his fifties was buried under the snow while skiing off-piste. More than 50 rescue personnel participated in the search operation, where he was found buried under about 2.5 meters of snow after nearly an hour, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

In a separate incident, rescue teams announced the recovery of the body of another skier who died in an avalanche at the Courchevel resort, without revealing further details. Local police also confirmed the death of a 32-year-old skier, who was swept away by a snow mass while skiing off-piste, in the town of Valorcine in the Haute-Savoie region.

These incidents occurred despite explicit warnings issued by the French meteorological authority about the heightened risk of avalanches, and clear advice to avoid skiing outside the safe tracks.

Authorities in the Savoie region recorded at least 6 avalanches in ski areas on Sunday morning, reflecting the severity of the prevailing weather conditions.
