America urges its nationals to leave Iran

Khaberni - The U.S. Department of State issued a security alert concerning Iran early Tuesday morning, urging its nationals to consider leaving by land through Armenia or Turkey due to the protests and developments occurring in Iran.

The State Department warned in the alert that protests throughout Iran are escalating, and security measures continue to intensify, including road closures, public transport disruptions, and ongoing internet outages.

It reported in its alert that airlines continue to restrict or cancel flights to and from Iran, with many services suspended until Friday, January 16.

It noted that U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages and plan for alternative means of communication.

It pointed out that if Americans find a safe route, they should leave Iran by land to Armenia or Turkey.

It explained that American-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran using Iranian passports, emphasizing that the Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality and will treat American-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens.

It stressed in its security alert that American citizens face a significant risk of interrogation, arrest, and detention in Iran, noting that displaying an American passport or showing ties to the United States could be a sufficient reason for Iranian authorities to detain someone.

In a related context, U.S. President Donald Trump announced early Tuesday the imposition of a 25% tariff on any country that engages in trade with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The U.S. President stated in a post on "Truth Social", "From now on, any country that engages in trade with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a 25% tariff on all its trade transactions with the United States."

Donald Trump confirmed in his post that this decision is final and binding.

Iran has been experiencing ongoing protests in the country since late December 2025 due to a sharp decline in the value of the Iranian rial and rising prices, with protests extending to more than 20 Iranian cities, while the authorities have pledged to address economic problems, they also committed to confronting acts of violence and vandalism.

Iranian officials have accused Israel and the United States of involvement in recent events in Iran.

Conversely, U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of a military strike against Iran over the ongoing protests there, while Iranian officials warned that Iran would respond to any U.S. military action, noting that the response would include Israeli targets.
