Morocco Announces End of SevenYear Drought Following Winter Rains

Khaberni - The Moroccan Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, said on Monday that the drought that Morocco has been experiencing for seven years ended after heavy rains this winter.

Baraka added that the levels of rainfall so far this winter have surged by 95% compared to the previous year and 17% above the seasonal average.

Official data showed that the average fill rate of the dams rose to 46%, with several major reservoirs reaching their full capacity.

The rains have contributed to rescuing the agricultural sector from the harmful effects of the water scarcity it had suffered for years.

A seven-year drought had depleted the water stored behind Moroccan dams, reduced wheat yields, decimated livestock herds, and caused severe job losses in the agricultural sector, prompting Morocco to accelerate its seawater desalination plans.

Baraka had said in December that Morocco aims to source 60% of its drinking water from treated seawater by 2030, up from 25% previously, leaving dam waters for inland areas.
