Khaberni - The Fatah movement confirmed today, Monday, that any committee to be discussed for formation to manage the affairs of the Gaza Strip must derive its legitimacy and be fully subject to the Palestinian Authority, and be chaired by a member of the Palestinian government.
This came in a statement issued by the movement’s spokesperson, Monther Al-Hayek, who obtained a copy of it from the German News Agency (DPA).
The statement clarified that the official stance of "Fatah" is based on the necessity for the "technocrat committee", intended to manage the transitional stage in Gaza, to be subject to the Palestinian Authority and operate under the leadership of a Palestinian minister.
Al-Hayek also warned that any divergent path, which does not rely on Palestinian legitimacy, will deepen the political and geographical division between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and "will entrench the reality of dealing with Gaza as a separate political unit".
He called on the leadership of the "Hamas" movement to coordinate with the mediators "to declare a clear commitment not to accept any formula that does not rely on these two conditions".
The Fatah spokesperson pointed out that the current situation requires the presence of "a unified Palestinian political system that is internationally recognized", which enables the rallying of international support for relief and reconstruction operations in the affected sector.
On the other hand, the "Hamas" movement confirmed that it has presented "positive and advanced positions" within the framework of internal Palestinian dialogue. The spokesperson for the movement, Hazem Qasim, called on the Palestinian Authority to respond to what he described as "the historic moment" and work towards achieving comprehensive national consensus.
Qasim, in separate statements, added that the field developments and the continuation of Israeli operations "impose the acceleration in unifying the Palestinian position" to face challenges that the movement considers "unprecedented and threatening to the Palestinian cause".
In the same context, a delegation including representatives from the "Hamas" movement led by Khalil Al-Hayya, in addition to a number of Palestinian factions, arrived in Cairo to discuss the mechanism for forming the proposed committee and the names of its members.
It is worth mentioning that the Palestinian factions had reached, during a meeting in Cairo in March last year, a preliminary agreement to form a temporary committee of independent figures from Gaza to manage civil affairs for a specified transitional period.
