Investigation by CAF Puts Algeria Under Severe Sanctions

Khaberni - The Confederation of African Football "CAF" opened an official and comprehensive investigation into the events that followed the Algerian national team's exit from the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations after losing 2-0 to the Nigerian team.

The French newspaper "Onze Mondial" mentioned that the decision to investigate is not limited to the severe protests shown by the Algerian players towards the match officials on the field during the game held last Saturday evening, but also extends to other incidents that occurred during and after the match, notably the altercations in the tunnel leading to the locker rooms, tensions in the mixed zone between players and journalists, and attempts by some fans to storm the field after the final whistle.

According to the same newspaper, "CAF" considered the scenes circulated by the media and social media platforms "unacceptable", which opens the door to imposing strict sanctions on the involved parties, especially after the circulation of footage showing the extreme anger of Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane, along with physical objections by some members of the technical staff and players on the field.

The African Confederation is expected to base its forthcoming decisions on the referees' and observers' reports, amid widespread anticipation for the outcomes of the investigation in the coming days.
