Khaberni - The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water discussed, during a meeting held on Monday chaired by MP Ahmed Al-Shdifat, and partially chaired by the vice president of the committee MP Jihad Abouey, the topic of protecting animal wealth and developing the ruminant sector, and ways to enhance the sustainability of animal production in the kingdom, as it is a fundamental pillar of national food security.
According to a statement from the committee, Al-Shdifat, in the presence of the Assistant Secretary-General for Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Agriculture Musbah Al-Tarawneh and a number of specialists, emphasized the importance of supporting animal breeders, especially in light of the challenges facing the sector, including the rising costs of feeds, water resource scarcity, and the impacts of climate change. He stressed the necessity of setting national policies and programs that contribute to the sustainability of this vital sector and improve its productivity.
Al-Shdifat and the committee members MPs Iyad Jabrin, Mohammad Al-Mara'yeh, Khaled Bani Atiyah, and Qasim Al-Quba'i added that the reality of the ruminant sector requires the preparation of comprehensive national programs and strategies to preserve this national wealth, pointing to the importance of improving local breeds, developing veterinary services, and enhancing immunization and disease prevention programs, in addition to supporting scientific research and agricultural guidance, benefiting the income of farmers and breeders positively.
The MPs called for enhancing the partnership between the public and private sectors, intensifying the supervision of the import of feeds and veterinary medicines, and regulating the markets, in a way that preserves the rights of breeders and ensures the quality of animal products.
They drew attention to the fact that the committee will continue to monitor this file with the relevant authorities, and work on formulating practical recommendations that contribute to protecting animal wealth and developing the ruminant sector, and achieving sustainability of animal production that serves the economy and enhances food security.
For his part, Al-Tarawneh said that the Ministry of Agriculture closely follows the issues of ruminant production and management of animal wealth in Jordan, as part of its efforts to enhance local production and achieve food security.
He added that the ruminant sector constitutes a fundamental pillar of animal wealth, emphasizing the need to develop support and rehabilitation programs for breeders, especially in areas such as improving breeds, feed management, and artificial insemination, which contribute to improving production efficiency and the quality of meat and milk.
He noted that the ministry works on coordinating policies and procedures related to the import and export of live animals and their products, while adhering to health and epidemic standards, to preserve animal health and protect consumers, emphasizing the importance of supporting small breeders and agricultural cooperatives by providing training, financing, and modern technologies, which enhance local productivity and reduce dependence on imports.
